Golden Eagles Settle For 0-0 Tie With Cal Baptist

Box Score

RIVERSIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team saw its high-powered offense shut down Saturday at Cal Baptist, but that didn't spell defeat for the Golden Eagles.

Instead, it meant a 0-0 draw with the Lancers in a match that was moved from a 1 p.m. start to 9 a.m. because of the sweltering heat wave that sent temperatures soaring well into the 100s.

The Golden Eagles (2-0-1), ranked 11th in the country, turned the pressure up a notch in the two overtime periods, but were unable to break the scoreless deadlock with Cal Baptist (2-0-1). The Golden Eagles, after being held to just one shot in the second half, fired off seven shots in the first 10-minute overtime period and three more in the second extra session. Cal Baptist goalie Adam Kramer made eight saves in the match, half of them in the overtime periods.

Cal State L.A. had an 18-13 advantage in shots and also had a narrow 8-7 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles had three corners during the two overtime periods.

The Golden Eagles had scored 10 goals in their first two games, victories over Saint Martin's and Cal State San Marcos.

Morten Marthinsen, Kristian Gaustad and John Massaquoi had four shots each for Cal State L.A. Tobias Hummel had a strong game in goal for the Golden Eagles and made five saves for his second shutout of the season. Hummel, a freshman, has not yet allowed a goal in three appearances this season.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Tuesday with a big home match against No. 6 Seattle University beginning at 1 p.m.
